Liam bor i bjergene med sin hustru Ava og deres lille søn Aru. Midt i sorgen og raseriet over Avas død står Liam alene tilbage med en søn, han aldrig har haft et forhold til. Overbevist om, at livet i den barske natur ikke er et liv for børn, beslutter Liam sig for at aflevere Aru hos nogle slægtninge i byen. De drager afsted til hest – men tingene går ikke, som Liam har forestillet sig. Og da slægtningene afviser hans søn, må han finde sin vej tilbage – mod sit hjem, og mod sin rolle som far.
