Edinburgh 1889. Frey und McGray haben schon einige ausweglose Situationen erlebt. Doch als sie mitten in der Nacht von Premierminister Salisbury zu einem Treffen geladen werden, stehen der feine Engländer und sein schottischer Vorgesetzter vor dem Ende. Denn niemand anders als Ihre Majestät Queen Victoria trachtet den Inspectors nach dem Leben. Die einzige Hoffnung auf Begnadigung: die Erfüllung einer Mission, die einem Todesurteil gleichkommt.

Madame Katerina, Hellseherin und Inspector McGrays enge Vertraute, hält eine Séance mit sechs Mitgliedern von Edinburghs reichster Familie ab. Am nächsten Morgen sind alle Teilnehmer tot, nur Madame Katerina selbst hat überlebt. Sie beteuert, dass der herbeigerufene Geist die Opfer aus Rache tötete. McGray glaubt ihr jedes Wort, muss aber eine weltliche Erklärung finden, um sie vor dem Galgen zu bewahren. Verzweifelt bittet er Ian Frey um Hilfe, der sich nach der grausamen Ermordung seines geliebten Onkels zurückgezogen hat.

Die Highlands 1889. Als der junge Erbe der betuchten Familie Koloman eine Todesdrohung erhält, reisen Inspector Frey und sein Kollege McGray unverzüglich zum nebelverhangenen nördlichen Zipfel des Landes. Dort, am abgelegenen Loch Maree, kommen sie im unheimlichen Herrenhaus der Kolomans unter. Die nahegelegene Insel ist von Fledermäusen befallen, und jeder der Bewohner scheint etwas zu verbergen. Als kurz darauf ein grausamer Mord im Wald geschieht, ist den Ermittlern klar: Um die Geheimnisse des mysteriösen Loch Maree zu wahren, geht jemand über Leichen.
