Hi, I'm Mike. Since May 2016, I have taught a monthly class at a local hospital called Babies Don't Bark. The class is designed to get expectant families ready to bring their new two-legged kid home to meet the four-legged ones you already have! I have two sons, 18 and 15, who both came home to two very large pooches and have been raised around a lot of dogs ever since. I've been a professional dog trainer for the last 10 years. My certification is CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed).

The articles or "ravings" in this book give the listener a glimpse inside just what I think about dog training. They are small snippets and articles on the way to understand how to speak dog as a second language vs. the tired and old ideas of the dog listening and doing what I want because I am the human. I hope to inspire you with these articles and whet your appetite to learn even more about a science-based positive-reinforcement way of keeping it simple stupid, and if nothing else, to at least have fun while training your dog.

Okay, please don’t misunderstand me. I am not trying to insult you with the title of this book. Rather, I want to get your attention. The goal of teaching you how to get you pooch to come back to you when you call them is secondary. My primary goal is to get you to think about dog training in a different way! In many ways, I train dogs the way most of us want to teach children.

It’s beautiful outside, and a perfect day for a walk! You call for your best four-legged friend, hook them up on the leash, and open the door...and the next thing you know, you are on your butt, shoulder throbbing in pain, and you catch a fleeting glimpse of your dog barreling down the street away from you.

Okay, my claim to fame as a dog trainer is "I train owners, not dogs". Each and every one of my books follow the same principle. I want you to be able to check out a book and easily get tips and tricks to help you and Fido work together!

Writing this book has been a challenge and a pleasure all at the same time. As I read and edit it (for what seems the 150th time), I realize it is way more than a book on how to be a great shelter volunteer. It is really a book about dogs, dog training, and the ability to relate to your dog without malice, over the top control or even dominance. I am very proud of the ideas here, and really hope that all the people that read this book rush out to their local shelter, sign up as a volunteer, and make a difference.

Over the past several years, I found there were five articles from my blog that became more and more popular. These five got more views, comments, and results than any of my other articles. In fact, my first session with clients often focused on these five topics as a way to jump-start training and leadership, not to mention help with owner frustration. I even started carrying copies of these articles in my car to give clients after our sessions. Then, one day, a client made two observations that have stuck with me, and been repeated by a few others as well.

I don't promise fast results - there is no magic bullet or Jedi mind tricks to fix the potty training issue! Instead, I teach you how to speak Dog as a Second Language (DASL) to tell Fido what behaviors you want and when you want them!

It Started as a little dog training business in Shawnee, KS. It was then a blog, and then we wrote some books! Videos next and a YouTube channel. We figured a podcast was the next logical step. What will you get? Honest, positive, science-based talks about all things dogs and dog training. We are all about training owners vs training dogs and we strive to teach folks to reward the behaviors they want vs. looking to correct the behaviors they don't want! It is all about redirection, rewarding, and reinforcing what it is you want your pup to do.

I want you to understand how hard puppies and dogs can be if you do it wrong. Dogs who lack confidence and socialization tend to be fearful, and that fear can lead to reactivity with people and/or other dogs, which can lead to aggression. This journey will be difficult, and it will take time and consistency on your part to be successful, but if you can set some simple routines right now and follow them daily, I can make this journey so much easier for you and your family.
