Library assistant June knows a lot about the regulars at Chalcot Library, yet they know very little about her. Dine biblioteksbøger fortæller mere om dig, end du tror... June Jones arbejder på det lokale bibliotek i Chalcot og kender de faste lånere rigtig godt, men de ved ikke ret meget om hende. Otte år tidligere mistede hun sin mor, og byen mistede dermed sin elskede bibliotekar. Mor og datter delte en stor kærlighed til litteraturen, men den lidt generte June føler ikke, hun kan leve op til landsbyboernes minder og høje tanker om sin mor. Da biblioteket pludselig er lukningstruet, slår en excentrisk gruppe af lokale lånere sig sammen for at redde det.

Da Libby ankommer til London med hjertesorg og frustrationer i bagagen, møder hun den aldrende Frank i bussen. Han fortæller hende, at han tilbage i 1962 mødte en ung kvinde med rødt hår – præcis ligesom Libbys – på den selvsamme busrute. Det var kærlighed ved første blik, men det blev aldrig til mere end det, for Frank mistede billetstumpen med kvindens telefonnummer på. Siden har han kørt med den samme bus igen og igen i en forgæves jagt på at finde sin drømmekvinde. Libby bliver grebet af historien og beslutter sig for at hjælpe Frank.

Dorothy Darling, 77 Jahre alt und misstrauische Eigenbrötlerin, lebt schon fast ihr halbes Leben in Shelley House im beschaulichen Chalcot. Als die 25-jährige Kat, die nicht nur pinke Haare hat, sondern auch noch ein schrottreifes Auto fährt, (illegalerweise!) bei Dorothys Nachbarn Joseph zur Untermiete einzieht, wittert die alte Dame Ärger. Shelley House soll abgerissen und durch ein Gebäude mit Luxusapartments ersetzt werden. Kat und Dorothy müssen sich verbünden, um den Frieden wiederherzustellen und Shelley House zu retten.
