In diesem Lustspiel in einem Aufzug sprechen die Ehepartner zuerst über ihr Verliebtsein nach einem Jahr Ehe. Sie haben 400 Taler gespart. Die Ehefrau möchte dafür Spitzen kaufen und ein schönes Geburtstagsdinner ausrichten. Der Ehemann möchte sich aber lieber ein wertvolles Pferd kaufen. Der Nachbar versucht zu vermitteln.

Seine Gegenspielerin, schwärmerisch der Einsamkeit hingegeben wie er, ist die gütige Menschenfreundin Eulalia, die auf dem Gut der Gräfin Wintersee in Stellung und allgemein nur als "Madame Müller" bekannt ist. Im zweiten und dritten Aufzug schürzt sich die geheimnisumwitterte Exposition zum dramatischen Knoten.
