Auf unserer Schweizerreise waren wir, ich und mein Reisebegleiter Harris, einmal im ›Schweizerhof‹ in Luzern abgestiegen, wo wir ein Tischgespräch hatten, an das ich zeitlebens denken werde. Man ging um 7½ zur Tafel, an der sich eine Menge Angehöriger der verschiedensten Nationalitäten zusammenfanden; doch ließen sich an den ungeheuer langen Tischen besser Kleider als Menschen beobachten, da man die Gesichter meist nur in der Perspektive zu sehen bekam.

"Meine Reise um die Welt" ist ein Reisebericht vom US-amerikanischen Schriftsteller Mark Twain (1835-1910). Bei dieser Ausgabe handelt es sich um den zweiten Teil (Zweite Abteilung) wo sich Twain mit „Indien“ und „Südafrika“ beschäftigt.

Ein Jahr war herum, seitdem Tom Sawyer und ich unsern alten Freund Jim befreit hatten, der auf der Farm von Toms Onkel Silas in Arkansas als fortgelaufener Sklave in Ketten gelegt worden war. Nun wurde es Frühling; der gefrorene Boden taute auf und mildere Lüfte wehten. Immer näher winkte die Zeit, wo man wieder barfuß gehen konnte; dann kam das Murmelspiel an die Reihe, später Kreisel und Reifen oder man ließ den Drachen steigen, und wenn es endlich Sommer geworden war ging's zum Schwimmen.

1601, written by Mark Twain, is a supposititious conversation which takes place in Queen Elizabeth's closet between the Queen, Ben Jonson, Beaumont, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Duchess of Bilgewater, and one or two others... If there is a decent word findable in it, it is because I overlooked it. 1601 depicts a highfalutin and earthy discussion between the Queen and her court about farting and a variety of sexual peccadillos, narrated disapprovingly and sanctimoniously by the Queen's Cup-Bearer, an eyewitness at the Social Fireside.

A remarkable resemblance of two boys born on the same day in the 16th century became the basis of Mark Twain’s first try at historical fiction. This resulted in a fable that was almost a fairy tale, one that became a fine story for young people of all ages. There were many unjust laws in the 1500s, and Twain delved into them with his usual remarkable insight.

Eines Tage kommt die Witwe Douglas auf die Idee, den Lausbuben Huckleberry Finn zu sich zu nehmen und wie einen eigenen Sohn großzuziehen. Hätte Huck das geahnt! Zusammen mit ihrer Schwester, Miss Watson, versucht Witwe Douglas ständig, an ihm herumzuerziehen. Sie meint allerdings, er würde sonst nie ein wohlerzogener Junge werden. Bis es Huckleberry Finn zu viel wird und er mit dem schwarzen Diener Jim flieht. Auf einem Floß fahren sie den Mississippi gen Süden und erleben auf dieser Reise manches spannende und nicht ganz ungefährliche Abenteuer.

In dieser Geschichte kommen zwar auch Tante Polly, Mary und die Witwe Douglas vor, doch die Hauptpersonen sind Tom Sawyer und sein Freund Huckleberry Finn. Zwei Lausbuben, die den Tag und ihre eigentlich ganz guten Ideen genießen. Schwimmen, fischen, prügeln, Schule schwänzen und Streiche aller Art spielen, das ist so richtig nach Toms Geschmack. Und dass er am Ende noch eine Höhle entdeckt, die für ihn und Huck einen Schatz verborgen hält, das hätte er sich in den abenteuerreichen Tagen am Mississippi nicht träumen lassen.

The ungentle laws and customs touched upon in this tale are historical, and the episodes which are used to illustrate them are also historical. It is not pretended that these laws and customs existed in England in the sixth century; no, it is only pretended that inasmuch as they existed in the English and other civilizations of far later times, it is safe to consider that it is no libel upon the sixth century to suppose them to have been in practice in that day also. The question as to whether there is such a thing as divine right of kings is not settled in this book.
