Als ich meinen Job als Barkeeperin in einer magischen Gilde antrat, wusste ich überhaupt nichts über Magie. Inzwischen bin ich praktisch Expertin für die verschiedenen Magieklassen, doch da ist eine, über die niemand spricht: Dämonica. Wie sich herausstellt, gibt es dafür einen guten Grund. Meine eigene Gilde ist absolut dämonenfrei, doch jetzt läuft ein Dämon frei herum. Sogar knallharte Kampfmagier sind ihm hoffnungslos unterlegen. Und das ist noch nicht alles: das Monster, das sie verfolgen, versteckt sich nicht. Es flieht nicht. Es tötet nicht wahllos. Der Dämon ist selbst auf der Jagd.

Als Barkeeperin in einer Gilde bin ich einiges gewohnt – exzentrische Magier, überhebliche Hexen, sogar der ein oder andere Dämon bringt mich nicht aus der Ruhe. Aber sobald es um Familie geht, bin ich raus. Und das gilt auch für fremde Familien. Warum ich also zugestimmt habe, mit Aaron über die Feiertage zu seinen Eltern zu fahren – den berühmten Leitern der Sinclair Academy –, ist mir ein Rätsel. Kaum angekommen, wird klar: Etwas stimmt hier ganz und gar nicht. Schüler der Akademie werden angegriffen, aber niemand hat die Täter je gesehen.

Als ich mich plötzlich dem gruseligsten Schwarzmagier der Stadt gegenübersehe und ihn praktisch herausfordere, mich zu entführen, frage ich mich schon, wie es überhaupt dazu kommen konnte. Alles begann damit, dass ich versehentlich einen Job als Barkeeperin ergatterte – allerdings nicht in einer Bar, sondern bei einer Gilde voller Magier, Zauberer, Alchemisten, Hexen und Medien. Einem schnöden Menschen fordert das ganz schön viel Anpassungswillen ab.
