As always, I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of "Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying." and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits. The Difference Between Employed… and Free Frankly, most surgeons will not do this, but that is the point. Indeed, most surgeons talk about going out on their own. However, few actually do it. Furthermore, even fewer emulate Dr. Suma Maddox. Specifically, she is a board-certified plastic surgeon in New Orleans. Previously, she spent years as a hospital-employed general surgeon. Consequently, she was locked into a noncompete agreement. Then, she made a definitive decision. Next, she went back into training. Afterward, she started over. Ultimately, she drove 200 miles each way every week. Moreover, she did this for months to secure the surgery cases needed for board certification. Undeniably, that immense effort paid off. Today, she owns her own practice. Additionally, she built a surgery center with two operating rooms. Plus, she rents this space to other surgeons. Furthermore, she will have that loan paid off by November. Truthfully, this success was not luck. Rather, it was the result of thinking like a founder. Surprisingly, she did not ask how to do more surgery. Instead, she asked how to build something she could control.
