About this listen

The Dead of Jericho is the fifth novel in Colin Dexter's Oxford-set detective series.

Morse switched on the gramophone to 'play', and sought to switch his mind away from all the terrestrial troubles. Sometimes, this way, he almost managed to forget. But not tonight . . .

Anne Scott's address was scribbled on a crumpled note in the pocket of Morse's smartest suit.

He turned the corner of Canal Street, Jericho, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 3rd October.

He hadn't planned a second visit. But he was back later the same day – as the officer in charge of a suicide investigation . . .

The Dead of Jericho is followed by the sixth Inspector Morse book, The Riddle of the Third Mile.

Some of the Morse plots work in the abridged versions but this one somehow doesn't - masterly narration by Kevin Whately but the plot feels disjointed and fractured somehow.

Having only seen the (excellent) TV versions of 'Morse', I hadn't appreciated how well crafted the books really are. An absolute delight - and no one other than Kevin Whately could possibly do them justice! Thank you so much! Now about to search for the rest of the series!

A Veritable Fanfare

Whately really is stellar in this. His performances of DeBryn, whenever he shows, are stunning. As for Morse, one would almost believe it's Mr Thaw himself!

Whoever hit upon the idea of Lewis voicing these, I wonder did they know they had gold in audio form?

I'm so glad these exist. They're great to snuggle into bed with.

I'm sure the full story is less confusing. Morse comes across as a morose bigot with few redeeming character traits.

Thumbs down for Abridged Versions
