I'm Gallup's principal economist, a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a freelance contributor to the New York Times's Upshot column. I earned a PhD from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School. As for why I wrote this book, I was born in the Northeastern United States and raised in Kentucky in a Catholic household that emphasized the inherent dignity of all people. I studied evolutionary psychology and philosophy as an undergraduate, and I've long been interested in justice, fairness, and how societies should be structured. Before getting my PhD, I worked for several years in mental health facilities, as well as for a New York City economic data company. My work and interests led me to have sympathy and compassion for the poor and confidence that humans are a cooperative species, capable of great things when political power is evenly distributed. My work led me to believe that much of what thought leaders on the political right and left were saying about inequality in income and social status was wrong. My book aims to provide a theoretical and factual foundation for a new way forward, toward a more just society--through political equality.
