In 1982 I started a greeting card business using the images of mandalas I had created. The text on the back of each card read: "JOHN TINGLEY is an artist, architect and writer living and working in New York City. His art is the expression of universal principles made manifest in color, light and form". At that time, I had done a bit of writing, some design-build work, worked as a set designer, photographer, carpenter, creator of personal mandalas, artist and was premature in my use of the title: architect. Over the years I became a registered architect, continued painting and drawing, and did a lot of writing, both personal and as an architect. On April 11th, 2025, my first book was published on Amazon KDP. 'Somewhere and Back Again. An Architecture Student's Grand Tour of Europe and the Middle East'. The book recounts my 1977 journey, my pilgrimage to the great cities of Europe and beyond. I am still an architect: forty-six years in the profession. I am still an artist: it is a state of mind. I am now devoting more time to writing, currently working on a collection of short stories.
