C. Anthony Sherman, affectionately known as Tony, hails from the vibrant state of Texas, was born in Crockett and raised in the heart of Houston's 5th Ward. His lifelong journey, spanning various roles and accomplishments, weaves a tapestry of creativity, service, and resilience.
Born with an entertainer's spirit, Tony's artistic journey took flight during his service in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1966. As a Crew Chief on B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War, he excelled in his military duties and showcased his talents as a singer and comedian. His performances for military personnel across the nation garnered attention, landing him appearances on notable shows like the Snookie Lanson Show and an invitation to The Ed Sullivan Show in 1966.
In 1967, Tony ventured to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a career in show business. His involvement in plays and the movie "The Interns" marked his entry into the entertainment world. Simultaneously, he attended night school at the University of Southern California, earning a BA in Business Administration.
Tony's artistic range extended beyond entertainment. He became a sought-after lecturer on preserving the rich historical culture of the South, leading to the publication of his book "The American Black Cowboys" in 1988. His dedication to educating others about the lost history of Black cowboys resulted in nationwide travels to schools and universities.
Recognized for his creative prowess, Tony studied portrait sculpture in France and produced significant works, including a bronze sculpture for Missouri City, busts of prominent figures, and a life-sized bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His contributions to the arts were acknowledged when Governor George W. Bush appointed him to the Texas Commission on the Arts in 1997.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Tony served as a Mediator/Counselor for various institutions, including the Dispute Resolution Center, Justice of The Peace Courts, United States Postal Service, and Windsor Village United Methodist Church. He founded the "Marriage Encounter Self Help Group," providing counseling to married couples.
Tony's literary contributions include six fictional novels, such as "The Sins of my Fathers 1 and 2," "The Promise at Koonville," "The Governor’s Appointment," "From the White Side," and "The Mystery in Mount Ash." These works showcase his storytelling prowess and can be found on platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, AuthorHouse, and Google under the name C. Anthony Sherman.
Honored as a Houston Point of Light by the Forward Times Newspaper of Houston, TX, Tony has significantly contributed to literature, society, and the arts.
