Then suddenly, there's another creature, which eventually Adam decides is his son Cain. It's all about confusion and curiosity, and finally, love for Eve.

"Rat Under Glass" is a short story that straddles the dark crime and extreme horror genres. It is primarily about Neo, a rat catcher who crosses the mob after his partner is killed by The Lobotomizer. Neo bungles the mob's bid for another sanitation contract by electrifying the runoff grids of New York. Lots of people fry, and the mob sees fit to dispense extreme punishment. Most of the story is about how Neo deals with that punishment, making use of his perseverance, tenacity, and off-the-wall thinking.

One of the early 20th century’s mystery writing masters, G.K. Chesterton, spins a tale set on the wild shores of Cornwall, England. Here the locals fear a grove of trees, the “peacock trees,” believed to spread disease and eat people. Squire Vane dismisses such talk as mere superstition. When three guests arrive, the discussion about the trees enrages the Squire who vows to show them how foolish this myth is by spending a night in the grove. The next day, he’s nowhere to be found. And then begins the effort to solve this latest mystery, made more difficult by the characters’ pride.

In the summer of 1870, Professor Joseph LeConte (1823-1901), and some of his students at the then brand-new University of California, went on a five-week camping trip on horseback to Yosemite and the High Sierra, including Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe. Along the way, LeConte and his students faced hardships of weather and terrain. They had difficulties with their horses and finding trails, and the weather made the men broil and freeze.
