During his twilight years, the French author Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote two original sequels to books that had fired his own youthful imagination but which he felt to be incomplete: Johann Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson and Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Arthur Gordon Pym (1845) was only one of many Poe stories which Verne admired; no other single author had more impact on his writing.

The oceans of the world are no longer safe. Ships are being attacked and sunk by what survivors describe as a giant sea monster. During the Civil War, five Union soldiers and a dog quietly escape from the clutches of the Confederate Army at Richmond, Virginia by hot air balloon. Their intention was to simply drift safely over to the Union lines and rejoin their own troops. Instead, while aloft, they were caught in a high wind and whisked hundreds of miles out to sea. The men carried no provisions for survival and had no idea where they were. Under those circumstances their future was bleak. Worse yet, the balloon was leaking air and slowly deflating.

L'isola misteriosa (L'Île mystérieuse) fu pubblicato nel 1874, e costituisce il terzo e ultimo capitolo di una trilogia iniziata con I figli del Capitano Grant e Ventimila leghe sotto i mari. Per questo vi si ritrovano alcuni personaggi dei due capitoli precedenti e allusioni alle vicende in essi narrate, primo fra tutti il Capitano Nemo.Il libro racconta le avventure di un gruppo di americani naufragati su un'isola del Sud Pacifico non segnata sulle mappe. L'"isola misteriosa" sulla quale la storia è ambientata (un'isola fittizia ipoteticamente situata nell'Oceano pacifico) può anche essere un riferimento alla vera isola di Lincoln.

Although published under the name of Jules Verne, “In the Year 2889” is now believed to be chiefly, if not entirely, the work of Jules' son, Michel Verne. In any event, many of the topics in the story echo Verne's ideas. A rather humorous look at the future.

In this series we listen to short stories that are NOT by perhaps the most well-known author of this type. But the many other rich talents in the volume may have treated the subject matter a little differently, or were perhaps just overlooked in the stampede to applaud the winner, but these authors are of equal merit.
