Notes from the author: The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. There were always a few holes in Elantris where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be heard after you’ve finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax.  

Poignant meditations occasioned by a unique convergence of commemorative events. On Good Friday, April 14, 1995, Christians remembered the crucifixion of Jesus, Jews reenacted the Passover, and the world at large observed the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust. How can the four men who stole me from my life be the same men who saved my life? And in the aftermath of that terrible night, where do we go from here? I don’t know what to believe anymore. I don’t know who to trust. All I know is that someone wants me dead. Someone is plotting in the shadows. The men vow they’ll keep me safe, but all of them are bound by duty to deliver me to Damian Novak, no matter what the consequences.

“What’s yours is mine…” Those are the words I spit like poison at Nico, Killian, and Atlas as we stood in front of their burning clubhouse. They’re the same words he said to me after Silas dropped the bombshell none of us saw coming: that I’m valuable somehow. I have no idea what Silas was talking about, but it doesn’t matter. My husband and the two dark-souled bikers I was starting to fall for have vowed that I’m going to pay for what I took from them—in blood, if it comes to that.
