In his dialogues, the Stoic philosopher Seneca outlines his thoughts on how to live in a troubled world. Tutor to the young emperor Nero, Seneca wrote practical philosophical exercises that draw upon contemporary Roman life and illuminate the intellectual concerns of the day. The dialogues also have much to say to the modern listener, as they range widely across subjects such as the shortness of life, tranquility of mind, anger, mercy, happiness, and grief at the loss of a loved one.

When Seneca, a stoic philosopher and advisor in Ancient Rome for emperor Nero, wrote these moral letters to Lucilius Junior, the then procurator of Sicily, he didn’t know he would soon be forced to take his own life for alleged complicity in a conspiracy to assassinate the emperor, in which he was probably innocent.

Story0
These three ‘Consolations', written by Seneca to his mother and two friends, have been described as ‘the crowning achievement in the canon of ‘consolation letters'. But sentimental they are not, for they emerge from the writer's deep-seated commitment to Stoicism, where individuals are exhorted to inhabit qualities of virtue, positivity, resilience, and indifference. This recording opens with Seneca's consolatory letter to Marcia, who, after three years, was still mourning the death of her son.

Story3
Of Anger by Seneca (4 BC-65 AD) defines and explains anger within the context of Stoic philosophy, and offers therapeutic advice on how to prevent and control anger. This is achievable by the development of an understanding of how to control the passions, and to make them subject to reason. Seneca believed that the passions arise in a rational mind as a misunderstanding of reality. A passion is a defective belief which occurs when the mind makes errors about the values of things.

Discover one of the most powerful philosophical works ever written, now in a clear and truly listenable modern English edition. On the Shortness of Life by Seneca is more than an ancient essay. It is a direct and timeless reflection on how we waste our lives, and how we can reclaim them. Written nearly 2,000 years ago, Seneca confronts a question that still defines modern life: Why does life feel so short? His answer is simple and unsettling: Life is not short. We make it short. What makes this edition different?
