"Le plaisir de rompre" (1897) est une comédie en un acte de Jules Renard, à portée autobiographique, et souvent jouée avec une pièce ultérieure de l'auteur, "Le pain de ménage" (1898). Maurice rend visite à Blanche, femme mûre qui est sa maîtresse, qu'il quitte alors qu'il prépare son mariage avec une jeune fille fortunée de sa génération. Jules Renard es un escritor y dramaturgo francés. El éxito llega con L'Écornifleur, publicado en 1892, que cuenta la historia de un escritor parásito. Alphonse Allais, Edmond Rostand, Courteline, les Goncourt, Tristan Bernard, Lucien Guitry y Sarah Bernhardt están entre su séquito. En 1894, se unió a la Sociedad de Gente de Letras y escribió Poil de Carotte, su gran éxito.
