Billy Byrne is a low class American born in Chicago's ghetto. He grows up a thief and a mugger. "Billy was a mucker, a hoodlum, a gangster, a thug, a tough." The Gods of Mars begins with John Carter's arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a 10-year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian afterlife.

Somewhere in the heart of Africa, a young archaeologist disappeared in the remote jungle mountains - Erich von Harben, son of an old missionary friend of Tarzan of the Apes. Now the ape-man seeks to rescue the lost scholar. The trail leads to a mysterious valley where Tarzan discovers two surviving outposts of ancient Rome, virtually unchanged by time. And there, Tarzan is thrust into the bloody gladiatorial arena, doomed to face every peril the cruel and corrupt emperor of Castra Sanguinarius can devise to ensure the ape-man’s death.

This is the fifth story in the Tarzan adventure novels. Tarzan’s enemy in this book is a Belgian traitor and an Arab chieftain named Achmet Zek. Tarzan intends to "liberate" more jewels from the lost city of Opar, unaware that his enemies know of his plan and that they intend to liberate the jewels from Tarzan. The running battle becomes so intense that Tarzan is incensed to the point of losing his newly found, refined demeanor and becomes the beast of old with a terrible ferocity.

After facing several humans who scheme to kill him, he decides to return to the jungles of Africa to be in the environment he was raised in once more. Along the way, he hears rumors about a lost city of gold hiding among the trees and sets off with newfound friends to pursue the treasure, unaware of the dangers surrounding the lost city.

The action is set during World War I. While John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan), is away from his plantation home in British East Africa, it is destroyed by invading German troops from Tanganyika. On his return, he discovers among many burned bodies one that appears to be the corpse of his wife, Jane Porter Clayton. Another fatality is the Waziri warrior Wasimbu, left crucified by the Germans. Maddened, the ape-man seeks revenge not only on the perpetrators of the tragedy, but all Germans, and he sets out for the battlefront of the war in East Africa.
