The great central fact of the universe is that Spirit of Infinite Life and Power that is behind all, that animates all, that manifests itself in and through all; that self-existent principle of life from which all has come, and not only from which all has come, but from which all is continually coming. If there is an individual life, there must of necessity be an infinite source of life from which it comes. If there is a quality or a force of love, there must of necessity be an infinite source of love whence it comes.

The purpose of these talks is to bring about a psychological change in you, the individual. Humanity, understood psychologically, is an infinite series of levels of awareness and you, individually, are what you are according to where you are in the series. Consciousness is the only reality, and where you are conscious of being psychologically, determines the circumstances of your life. The ancients knew this great truth, but our modern teachers have yet to discover it.

Life is creation’s greatest treasure for man in the flesh, and most men should enjoy it much longer than they do. This can easily be done by learning the body’s simple requirements, and living in harmony with that knowledge. To an intelligent, unprejudiced person who can and does think, the information contained in this work may seem simple. But it is the fundamental simplicities that are always difficult to accept, because they are so very simple, and, therefore, unbelievable on that account.

The first part of this audiobook comprises several lectures to classes delivered by the present author in New York. The second part is a rather free translation of the aphorisms (sutras) of Patanjali, with a running commentary. Effort has been made to avoid technicalities as far as possible and to keep to the free and easy style of conversation.

Originally published in 1894, Rudolf Steiner's Die Philosophie der Freiheit was considered by Steiner to be his most enduring work above all others. This is the first English translation, which was done in 1916. Two years later, in 1918, he revised it to be more in line with The Theosophical Society's philosophy. Some attain power and position - others attain wealth and social state, by reason of some inner force.
