We live in a secular, skeptical, and cynical age. Americans have lost faith in its institutions - including the church. Although the vast majority of Christian leaders serve faithfully, examples of financial fraud, greed, sexual and emotional abuse, and other systemic problems are almost everyday occurrences. And a watching world has a right to ask even those who are faithful ministers of the Gospel: “If you knew this was happening, why didn’t you say something?”

In five of lectures delivered at Princeton Seminary during the summer of 1914, B. B. Warfield used “a progressive series of corrections” to explain “the divine dealing with man which ends in his salvation.” Starting with the divide between naturalism and supernaturalism, continuing to sacerdotalism and evangelicalism, and on through universalistic vs. particularistic views, Warfield emphasized complete dependence upon God: “It is only the Calvinist that has warrant to believe in salvation whether of the individual or of the world.”

The Gospel is primarily about God. Part of the glory of the New Testament is that it explains the Gospel to us in terms of the glorious work of the three persons of the Trinity. Yet many can miss the rich Trinitarian backdrop of the New Testament because they are not looking for it. Knowing the Trinity shows that knowing God is knowing him as Triune and that to know him is to love him. Each section leads listeners to meditate on God’s work and how they relate to him in light of passages of Scripture that appeal to all three divine persons.

God provides rest for his people, yet the way we rest on Sunday remains a divisive issue in the church. How can we honor the biblical commandment while upholding liberty of conscience? Christians have some navigating to do. The culture we live in hates the message we cherish. We know the gospel we share is offensive, but sometimes we make it more offensive by our behavior. Is there a way to share an offensive message to an offended culture while not being gratuitously offensive? Blake Long challenges evangelicals: Let the gospel do the offending, not us. In his spiritual autobiography, Thomas Scott (1747-1821) describes entering ministry in the Church of England under false pretenses. Through the unexpected friendship of John Newton (author of Amazing Grace) Scott becomes convicted of his sin and need for God's grace. As had John Wesley, Scott considers himself "snatched...as a brand from the burning".

B. B. Warfield critiques claims of miraculous divine healing and other supernatural gifts in the post-apostolic church. He argues that true miracles ceased with the close of the apostolic age, and he debunks purported signs and wonders from the patristic era through his own time. Warfield maintains that while God still is at work in the world, He now acts through providential means rather than through immediate, miraculous intervention.
