Il titolo originale di questo libro "None Other Gods" indica già che il romanzo è la storia di una conversione. Nel libro si tratta della conversione di un rampollo della nobiltà inglese a una vita in povertà (con un rosario in mano); nella vita dell'autore si tratta della sua conversione dal protestantesimo (fu arcivescovo di Canterbury) al Cattolicesimo.

Things turn bad when Beach discovers the mutilated body of the foreman. The county sheriff thinks O'Neill is the killer, but doesn't have evidence to prove it.
