V první části přijíždí do Staré Vsi její pán, volnomyšlenkářský šlechtic a podivínský diplomat, který se dlouhá léta zdržoval v izině a pak se rozhodl pro klidný život ve staré vlasti. Nepočítal však s tím, že v nepatrné vesnici objeví elý nový svět. Druhá část vyprávění vrhá hrdinu do dnešní doby se všemi jejími zlořády a ečistotami.
