John Henry Newman (1801-1890) est l'un des grands penseurs chrétiens et l'un des grands maîtres et guides spirituels des temps modernes. Profondément marqué par une expérience spirituelle vécue à l'âge de 15 ans, il passe presque trente ans de sa vie à l'Université d'Oxford comme étudiant puis comme enseignant et chercheur, mais aussi comme pasteur, devenant le prédicateur le plus écouté et le plus influent de tout le pays.

Il cardinale Newman, beatificato dalla Chiesa cattolica nel 2010, è considerato uno dei più grandi prosatori inglesi, ma certamente questo romanzo, ambientato nel terzo secolo dopo Cristo e riguardante il cristianesimo in Africa, interessa sia per la ricostruzione storica sia per i toccanti passaggi relativi alla conversione di una giovane greca.
