Skippy i pułkownik Joe Bishop przepadli bez wieści, maxolhxańska sztuczna inteligencja przejęła władzę na "Walkirii", a załoga "Latającego Holendra" musi jak najszybciej znaleźć sposób, by ocalić nie tylko siebie, ale również Ziemian niedawno uwolnionych z więzienia na planecie Rikers. Co gorsza, Maxolhxowie i Rindhalu zauważyli nietypowe zachowanie tuneli czasoprzestrzennych. Rozpoczynają wspólne śledztwo, które może doprowadzić ich do Ziemi. Los całej ludzkości staje pod znakiem zapytania.

Galaktyka jest skazana na zagładę. Ludzie są zbyt uparci, żeby dać za wygraną, jednak Skippy zna straszliwą prawdę. Tej walki nie może wygrać. Pozostaje mu żywić nadzieję, że zdoła zachować choć nikłe wspomnienia o cywilizacjach zamieszkujących Drogę Mleczną. Chyba że Joe Bishop i Wesoła Banda Piratów raz jeszcze dokonają niemożliwego.

Wesoła Banda Piratów ocaliła świat już kilkukrotnie, teraz jednak musi pogodzić się z tym, co nieuniknione. Ziemię czeka zagłada. Piratom pozostaje jedynie przetransportowanie kilku tysięcy Ziemian w bezpieczne miejsce, zanim kosmiczni najeźdźcy zniszczą ojczystą planetę ludzi. Choć to niezupełnie prawda. Pułkownik Joe Bishop i jego załoga mogą zrobić coś jeszcze. Zadać nieprzyjacielowi tak druzgocący cios, by pożałował, że kiedykolwiek usłyszał o Ziemi i jej mieszkańcach.

Walczyliśmy po złej stronie wojny, której nie mogliśmy wygrać. I to były te dobre wieści. Ruharowie uderzyli w Dzień Kolumba. Niewinnie dryfowaliśmy sobie na naszej błękitnej kropce, jak rdzenni mieszkańcy Ameryki w 1492 roku. Za horyzontem pojawiły się okręty technologicznie zaawansowanej, agresywnej kultury i BUM! Skończyły się stare, dobre czasy, kiedy tylko ludzie zabijali siebie nawzajem. Cóż, Dzień Kolumba. Pasuje.
