K jezeru na anglickém venkově přijíždí opět po roce strávit báječné letní prázdniny čtveřice dětí - Vlaštovky. Společnost jim mají dělat dvě místní dívky - Amazonky. Ze začátku se nic nedaří podle plánu. Amazonky nemohou tábořit na ostrově Divokých koček, protože na návštěvu přijela prateta a tak místo dobrodružných pirátských výprav musí být nastrojené ve svátečních šatech. A aby toho nebylo málo, Vlaštovky nešťastně ztroskotají a přijdou tak o svou loď. Žádná nesnáz ale nemůže porazit děti s fantazií a odhodláním.

Arthur Ransome is best known for his Swallows and Amazons series of children’s books. This is the only example of his fiction in the public domain. These stories are all from Russian folklore, some comparatively well-known, others less so. Ransome spent some years in Russia as a newspaper correspondent for the Daily News and the Manchester Guardian and was peripherally involved in the revolution. In 1913, Arthur Ransome traveled to Russia to explore Russian folklore. The result of his studies was the publication of retellings (rather than translations) of a number of stories, including The Soldier and Death, which first appeared in 1920.
