Their lives change radically one morning when their father, Luigi Sacco, receives an anonymous letter from the local Mafia demanding protection money and is the victim of a robbery attempt. Luigi tells the police of the extortion letters he received, but the police don't know what to do.

Il commissario Montalbano indaga tra l'immaginaria Vigàta e Tindari, il promontorio a picco sul mare "col piccolo, misterioso teatro greco e la spiaggia a forma di una mano con le dita rosa". Un triplice omicidio è avvenuto - un giovane dongiovanni che viveva al di sopra dei suoi mezzi apparenti, due anziani pensionati seppelliti in casa che improvvisamente decidono una gita a Tindari. Li collega, sembra, solo un condominio.

Strane lettere anonime con istruzioni per una caccia al tesoro stuzzicano la curiosità di Montalbano. Il gioco però si fa tenebroso e «sprofonda in abissi cupi e sordidi». Una storia inquietante, cruenta, con un commissario più incline alla riflessione e che questa volta rischia davvero grosso.

Come in un gioco di specchi, in questa nuova avventura, qualcuno vuole confondere Montalbano: «un villino, un giro di macchine, una storia d'amore un po' shakespiriana, due esplosioni apparentemente insensate, un proiettile senza tracciabile direzione, una coppia di cadaveri... Vorticano tra i riflessi ingannevoli, le deformazioni e le mezze verità di metaforici specchi».

Quasi una vita, momento per momento, quelli più intensi che nel tempo acquistano ancora più vigore e ritornano in tutta la loro vividezza. Tanti incontri qui offerti nella forma del racconto, ognuno dei quali ha una luce, un'atmosfera e dei personaggi indimenticabili che hanno segnato soprattutto la giovinezza e l'adolescenza di Camilleri. Alcuni conosciuti negli anni più maturi, durante la sua carriera di regista teatrale e televisivo, molti altri sconosciuti, che ci riportano ai tempi del fascismo, della guerra.
