Fu la casa editrice a suggerire all'autore una qualche presa di distanza da questi racconti fantascientifici apparentemente così lontani dai due libri di Levi pubblicati in precedenza: "Se questo è un uomo" e "La tregua". Oggi che finalmente sappiamo distinguere il testimone dallo scrittore, i racconti delle "Storie naturali", come già quelli del "Sistema periodico", sono destinati a crescere nella considerazione dei critici e dei lettori.
