John McVittie, a scientist tired of human beings, decides to retire in an isolated cottage on the shores of Scotland so he can work in his laboratory room quietly. During a strong stormy night, a boat named "Archangel" is shipwrecked near his house. Reluctant at first, he consents to see if he can be of any help. He saves the, apparently, only living survivor from the shipwreck...

Mr. Hammond, who is travelling on the American steamer "The Spartan", is suspicious about two passengers after having witnessed their conversation on the deck. They were talking about a secret square box, a mechanism, and the fact that the world will soon hear of it...

Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

Recently unemployed, John Huxford accepts an offer to work at Sheridan & Moore, Montreal in Quebec. He agrees with his fiancée that he will first travel alone to prepare everything for a few weeks before she can join him. Unfortunately, weeks, months pass and she gets no news from John. Sheridan & Moore even say they never saw him in Montreal. Many years pass, and it seems that he has died somewhere or started a new life.

"Crooken Sands" is a short story by Bram Stoker. It was first published in the UK in the December 1, 1894 issue of Holly Leaves the Christmas Number of The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, London. Mr Arthur Fernlee Markam, who took what was known as the Red House above the Mains of Crooken, was a London merchant, and being essentially a cockney, thought it necessary when he went for the summer holidays to Scotland to provide an entire rig-out as a Highland chieftain, as manifested in chromolithographs and on the music-hall stage.

The story describes in gory detail how an American tourist in the German city of Nuremberg accidentally kills a kitten. It goes on to describe, in equally gory detail, how the kitten's mother gets revenge on the American.

"The Secret of the Growing Gold" is a short story by Bram Stoker. It was first published in the January 23, 1892 issue of the newspaper Black and White: A Weekly Illustrated Record and Review, London. It was reprinted in the October 14, 1892 issue of Bow Bells: A Family Magazine of General Literature, London.
