The promise of $5,000, though, is too tantalizing to ignore. Jon Dangle is a keeper of secrets, many of which are buried deep beneath his dealership. He works hard to keep them hidden, but occasionally sacrifices are required, sacrifices who are penniless, desperate, and who will not be missed. Sacrifices exactly like DeWitt.

Travel is the opposite of prejudice; it is curiosity, openness and connection. When our world is in flux, travel matters more than ever. It is the only way to go beyond the narratives that are fed to us, and understand the world through your own experience. Understanding does not automatically come from travel. You have to work for it. And, with barriers and restrictions coming and going at a dizzying rate, now is the time to learn how to eke the most out of whatever travel opportunities we are able to seize.

Story1
At the crux of America's history stand two astounding events: the immediate and complete destruction of the most powerful system of slavery in the modern world, followed by a political reconstruction in which new constitutions established the fundamental rights of citizens for formerly enslaved people. Few people living in 1860 would have dared imagine either event, and yet, in retrospect, both seem to have been inevitable. In a beautifully crafted narrative, Edward L. Ayers restores the drama of the unexpected to the history of the Civil War.
