Pubblicato anonimo nel 1816, "Emma" appartiene agli scritti di Jane Austen cosiddetti "della maturità". Al centro del romanzo Emma Woodhouse, una giovane donna bellissima e un po' "viziata" che, rimasta padrona assoluta della casa dove vive dopo il matrimonio della sorella, si trova a gestire il piccolo mondo che le ruota intorno.

Northanger Abbey fu il primo romanzo di Jane Austen ad essere pubblicato anche, se in precedenza erano già state stese delle versioni di Orgoglio e pregiudizio e di Ragione e Sentimento. Il suo titolo originario, Susan (nome della protagonista che fu poi mutato in Catherine) fu rivisto per la stampa dalla Austen nel 1803, e venduto ad un editore che decise poi di non pubblicarlo.

Considerato un romanzo "atipico" nella produzione letteraria di Jane Austen (Inghilterra, 1775/1817), "Persuasione" è il romanzo della maturità di Jane, dove i toni spumeggianti ed ironici che la caratterizzano lasciano il posto ad una narrazione dai toni più malinconici e introspettivi. Unica concessione all'ironia austeniana, il personaggio del padre della protagonista, un baronetto sciocco e vanesio il cui unico scopo nella vita è quello di apparire sempre giovane e bello.
