Piyutim for Yamim Tovim

Story0
Piyutim are liturgical poems written by some of the greatest poets and leading Talmidei Chachamim in our history. Unfortunately, they are written in a very abstruse and complex language using references to midrashim, pesukim, and events in Jewish history which may be difficult to fathom. These shiurim are text-based and will take the listener on a journey through the sources and deeper meanings of the piyut. The shiur will also point out poetic devices such as rhyme, meter, homonyms, onomatopaeia, which the paytan used.

Story0
What is the teaching of Lashon Hara? Many Jewish teachings emphasize avoiding negative speech about others. Lashon hara is said to harm three people at the same time: the one who says it, the one who hears it, and the one who’s being talked about. The opposite of lashon hara is lashon hatov, or good speech. Is Lashon Hara biblical? The Torah contains a general injunction against rekhilut (gossip): “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:16) Is Lashon Hara a sin? Lashon ...

In Aderes Eliyahu, the Vilna Gaon presents a deeper dimension to the Book of Yonah/Jonah. He explains it as an allegory of the story of the human soul and its struggle with and victory over a body and planet inhospitable to its spiritual mission. Adapted from the Gaon’s commentary by Rabbi Moshe Schapiro.

Our current exile is confusing and dark, but redemption beckons at every corner. The great, prolific 18th-century sage, Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, wrote what was to be Ma’amar HaGeulah as a letter to his students, at the age of twenty-three, revealing to them the nature of the process of redemption.
