The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is the second published collection of short stories featuring the famous consulting detective and his friend and colleague Dr. Watson.

In "The Happy Hypocrite", mischievous Cupid compels disreputable Lord George Hell to win the love of sweet young Jenny Mere by assuming a saintly mask of true love to disguise his own wicked features. "Zuleika Dobson" tells the story of the effect of the devastatingly attractive Miss Dobson on the all-male undergraduate body of Oxford, culminating in a watery end to the Eights Week boat races. And in "Seven Men", Beerbohm blurs the boundary between fact and fiction to tell the incredible stories of six men (Beerbohm himself is the seventh) from the world of the 1890s.

Unlike Peacock's other novels, Maid Marian has a substantial plot, based on the romantic legend of Robin Hood. As is usual with Peacock, the violence is presented in a rather humorous fashion and the characters indulge lavishly in eating and drinking. Beneath the veneer of this well-known and innocuous narrative, Peacock finds ample opportunity to satirize the foibles of church and secular government.
