Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is known universally for the gentle charm of Le Petit Prince, but it is this book, Land of Men - known originally in English as Wind, Sand and Stars - which is his masterpiece. First published in 1939, it documents Saint-Exupéry's life as a pilot in the pioneering days of long-distance flying and in particular his experiences as a pilot transporting mail across countries, across continents.

Dining alone in an elegant Parisian brasserie, accountant Daniel Mercier can hardly believe his eyes when President François Mitterrand sits down to eat at the table next to him. In The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry provides a roadmap for the human soul. A stranded pilot meets a golden-haired boy from Asteroid B-612 who reveals the absurdity of "grown-ups"—those so consumed by authority and figures that they have forgotten how to live.

A pilot stranded in the desert awakes one morning to see, standing before him, the most extraordinary little fellow. "Please," asks the stranger, "draw me a sheep." And the pilot realizes that when life's events are too difficult to understand, there is no choice but to succumb to their mysteries. He pulls out pencil and paper... The poignant life-and-death odyssey begins when the Little Prince mysteriously appears in the Sahara Desert and says to a downed Aviator, "If you please, draw me a sheep". The startled Aviator complies, but his drawing is rejected, and a conversation ensues with the Little Prince asking numerous questions and telling stories about the very strange grown-ups encountered on his interplanetary journey to Earth. It is later revealed that the Little Prince must return home to asteroid B612 to care for his rose, the one (and only) flower on his small and desolate planet.

Two masterpieces of literature are united in this essential volume. The Little Prince and A Little Princess may appear different—one a philosophical fable of space travel, the other a grounded Victorian drama—but together they weave a tapestry of resilience and hope.

One night last winter, Antoine Leiris was at home looking after his son while his wife, Hélène, was at a concert with friends. Suddenly he started receiving text messages asking if he was okay.
