Tida como a primeira poetisa romântica preta do Brasil, Auta de Souza, que teve uma breve vida de apenas 25 anos, deixou uma obra significativa, cujo valor foi reconhecido, entre outros intelectuais, por Luís da Câmara Cascudo. Este livro reúne alguns de seus magníficos poemas, como "Ao luar", "Página triste" e "Recuerdo", além do poema que dá título ao livro.
