  • Episode 456 – The Future of AI Still Depends on Human Connection with Lars Helgeson
    Jul 10 2026
AI is changing business faster than ever, but the real advantage still comes from people. I had the pleasure of talking with Lars Helgeson, entrepreneur, technologist, and author of CRM for Dummies, about how customer relationship management, artificial intelligence, and patient education are reshaping the way businesses and healthcare providers serve people. Lars shares how his career evolved from building one of the early email marketing platforms to creating CRM solutions and, more recently, a patient education platform designed to improve health outcomes after medical procedures. We also explore the opportunities and risks of AI, why relationships remain at the heart of every business, and how technology should support people rather than replace them. I believe you'll find practical ideas about leadership, innovation, healthcare, and building stronger customer relationships that can help you develop your own Unstoppable Mindset. Highlights: 02:08 - How AI helps build stronger customer relationships. 12:13 - Why AI should never replace medical judgment. 27:01 - How CRM evolved beyond email marketing. 38:47 - Why patient education became Lars' mission. 45:00 - Why accountability starts with good documentation. 55:00 - How small changes improve patient outcomes. About the Guest: Lars Helgeson is an internet entrepreneur, technologist, and CRM strategist dedicated to helping organizations grow through what he calls “Complete CRM”, a unified, data-driven approach that connects sales, marketing, customer service, and operations into one accountable system. He entered the internet marketing world in 2000, co-founding CoolerEmail, one of the world’s first email service providers. As a pioneer in responsible email marketing, he helped grow CoolerEmail into a global software company specializing in marketing communication with over 1,500 clients. In 2010, after years spent designing and implementing a more comprehensive approach for small and mid-sized businesses, Lars launched GreenRope, a cloud-based platform that simplifies and consolidates a company’s sales, marketing, and operations. Today, GreenRope provides technology solutions to more than 3,000 companies and nonprofits in over 40 countries. His new venture, Easy Aftercare, focuses on using CRM technology for automated patient education. Lars is the author of CRM For Dummies (Wiley, 2017) and a frequent speaker on CRM strategy, marketing automation, entrepreneurship, and business growth. His guiding principle is straightforward: “If it isn’t in the CRM, it didn’t happen.” He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the University of New Mexico’s Robert O. Anderson School of Management. After graduate school, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force, working in the Air Force’s space test program, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. Raised in Southern California, he credits a science-teacher father for curiosity and a social-worker mother for empathy, an influence that shows up in his people-first view of technology. Outside of work, he enjoys travel, stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, ice hockey, and yoga. • Episode 455 – Why the Best Leaders Flip Between Grit and Empathy with Tommy Brown
    Jul 7 2026
Great leaders know when to push and when to pause. That balance sits at the heart of my conversation with former college basketball coach Tommy Brown. Tommy shares how growing up with dyslexia and ADHD helped build the grit that shaped his career but also taught him that toughness alone is never enough. You will hear why empathy is the missing piece in leadership, how putting the team ahead of yourself changes everything, and why failure only becomes real when you stop learning. Tommy also opens up about coaching, personal setbacks, the lessons he learned from his rescue dogs, and how those experiences inspired his message of "Be the Thumb." I believe you will find practical ideas you can apply whether you're leading a business, coaching a team, or simply trying to become a better person. Highlights: 00:01:15 – How growing up with dyslexia and ADHD helped build lifelong grit and resilience. 00:22:30 – Why empathy became Tommy's greatest leadership lesson after decades of coaching. 00:24:39 – The powerful story behind "flipping the switch" between grit and empathy. 00:36:43 – Why mental toughness and mental health are not the same thing. 00:46:12 – The coaching lesson that taught Tommy to stop complaining and simply "figure it out." 00:58:13 – The personal leadership failure that forever changed the way Tommy leads others. About the Guest: Tommy Brown is a former college basketball coach turned motivational speaker, author, and founder of One Heartbeat LLC, a leadership and culture-building organization that has worked with more than 1,000 athletic teams and countless business leaders across 43 states. Over his 20-year coaching career, Tommy earned 389 wins, 13 consecutive 20-win seasons, six Conference Coach of the Year honors, and the 2008 NAIA National Coach of the Year award. His leadership journey has taken him from the Big Ten to small college locker rooms—always centered on one mission: to build teams with grit, empathy, and purpose. Tommy’s message reaches far beyond the court. After years of studying what separates teams that survive from those that thrive, he founded One Heartbeat to help coaches, athletes, and corporate leaders cultivate mental toughness, teamwork, and trust. His signature Warrior Culture Sessions empower participants to embrace both toughness and compassion as essential traits for sustained success. He is also the author of Grundy and Sadie: Unleashing the Power of Grit and Empathy, inspired by his two dogs—a rescue Pitbull named Grundy and a Goldendoodle named Sadie—whose contrasting personalities teach powerful lessons about leadership, resilience, and relationships. Tommy’s work has led to the creation of The Be Grundy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps young women develop grit, resilience, and self-worth through sports and wellness initiatives, while also supporting animal rescue efforts. A Chattanooga native, Tommy’s story reflects the lessons he teaches: that real strength isn’t just about toughness—it’s about flipping the switch between grit and empathy to bring out the best in yourself and others. • Episode 454 – The Truth About Dog Behavior That Most Owners Miss with Hanne Grice
    Jul 3 2026
Every animal is telling you something. The real question is whether you're paying attention. I sit down with animal behavior expert Hanne Grice to explore what our pets reveal about trust, stress, communication, and even ourselves. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience, Hanne explains why behavior is never random, why outdated dominance theories continue to harm animals, and how curiosity leads to better relationships with both pets and people. We also discuss guide dogs, emotional regulation, grief, parenting with dogs, and the science behind building trust through predictability and choice. I believe you'll find this conversation valuable whether you share your life with animals or simply want to become a better leader, communicator, and observer of those around you Highlights: 05:47 – The biggest breakthrough in animal behavior starts with changing the human. 09:35 – A common belief about dog dominance is challenged by modern science. 20:34 – Jane Goodall's work transformed how we understand animal emotions and personalities. 31:02 – Hidden medical issues often explain behaviors owners mistake for disobedience. 45:14 – Giving animals more choice can reduce stress and strengthen trust. 58:21 – Remarkable stories show how animals have influenced history in unexpected ways. About the Guest: Hanne Grice is a UK Clinical Animal Behaviourist, Certified Trainer, and award-winning educator who specialises in the science of human–animal relationships. She founded Hanne Grice Pet Training and Behaviour in 2006 and has supported thousands of families across dogs, cats, and small companion animals. Her work centres on evidence informed welfare, behaviour change, and practical strategies that help people and their animals nurture stable, healthy relationships. Alongside clinical practice, Hanne lectures at the postgraduate level in applied animal behaviour, human–animal interactions, and the psychology that shapes how people understand and interact with their pets. She previously served on the Board of the UK’s Animal Behaviour and Training Council. When her tenure concluded in July 2025, she was appointed an Honorary Individual Member in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the charity’s mission to raise and protect professional standards. Hanne is known for making science accessible. Her “How Does…” series explores everyday behaviour across species, and her “Animals in History” films examine the remarkable roles animals have played across cultures and time. She is the author of Playing with Your Dog (2010), a practical guide to enriching the lives of companion animals through evidence-informed play. Her research includes studies on dog–owner relationships during pregnancy and early parenthood, as well as ongoing work on behaviour change techniques for animal professionals. She continues to develop tools that bring together behavioural science, practical welfare, and effective communication, helping owners and practitioners create environments where animals feel safe, understood, and able to thrive.
