Step into the lab.

This is the Leafs Lab Podcast, hosted by Michael (LeafZone44) and Jordan (Willyston Riellander), a space built for deeper thinking around the Toronto Maple Leafs. When the conversation around this team stays surface-level, we go the other direction. Every episode breaks down not just what's happening, but why it's happening—from roster decisions and systems to front office philosophy and long-term vision.

If you’re looking for hot takes, this isn’t it. This is where analysis meets curiosity, where every angle gets examined, and where the details actually matter.

Welcome inside the lab, let’s get to work.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 13: Breaking Down the Leafs' July 1 Shopping and Early 2026-27 Projections
    Jul 7 2026

Free agency is in the books — and the Leafs made a lot of moves. Whether they made the right ones is a different conversation

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with the Barrett Hayton offer sheet the Leafs didn't do — and why that might be the most frustrating decision of the entire offseason (1:15). From there, we share our early overall thoughts on what Chayka put together on July 1st and what it tells us about the direction of this franchise (6:30).

Then we work through every signing and trade one by one. Troy Stecher re-signs (10:23), we get into Jack Roslovic — a move we're not thrilled about (14:35). Then the big one: Sergei Bobrovsky on three years at $7 million (24:50). From there it's Colton Sissons (36:37), Teddy Blueger (44:34), Brandon Duhaime (48:29), Nick Robertson is traded (53:20), and the best move of the day — the Nick Paul trade (54:39).

We also get into the Zach Werenski deal that never happened and what it means for this team's defensive ceiling going forward (1:09:02), before taking a step back and breaking down Chayka's overall team-building philosophy and whether it's the right approach for a team trying to contend (1:14:00).

We close things out projecting the 2026-27 lines as they currently stand (1:27:44) and sharing our season predictions and what still needs to get done before training camp (1:34:10).

The floor is better. The ceiling is still a question. Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 12: McKenna is a Leaf, Free Agency Preview, and the Werenski Trade
    Jun 29 2026

The draft is over — and the Leafs walked away with the best player in it.

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with a breakdown of the Leafs' draft class (1:50) before getting into everything Gavin McKenna — why this kid is the real deal, what makes him perfect for this market, and what the early top six could look like heading into free agency (6:57).

From there, we say goodbye to Brandon Carlo (27:10). Then it's straight into the free agency preview — centre targets including Pettersson, Hayton, and Jenner (30:12), before pivoting to the biggest trade conversation in Leafs Land right now: should the Leafs go all in on Zach Werenski, and what would it actually take to get him? (48:27)

We round things out with a look at the winger market — Marchment, Bjorkstrand, Arvidsson, and Tolvanen (57:50) — the defensive free agent options and what happens with Morgan Rielly (1:11:30) — and close with the goalie question nobody can agree on: do the Leafs go big on Sergei Bobrovsky? (1:17:49)

The offseason is just getting started. Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 11: Joseph Woll is Traded, Jim Hiller is Hired, and Darren Raddysh Comes Home
    Jun 19 2026

This might be the most chaotic week of the offseason yet — and we have a lot to sort through.

We start with the shocking Joseph Woll trade (1:15). We break down why the Leafs cashed in on his peak value now, what it says about their belief in Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby, and how it clears a path for Artur Akhtyamov. Plus, we dive into the return: why we're fascinated by the high-upside bet on the fiercely competitive Emil Andrae and how his puck-moving game brings a much needed element to the team's blue line.

From there, we pivot to the bench and the official Jim Hiller hiring (25:10). We admit to our initial overreaction and explain how his progressive background with video tracking, his power-play success with Auston Matthews, and his stingy defensive structures in LA won us over.

Then, we tackle the absolute blockbuster news of the morning: the Darren Raddysh sign-and-trade (54:40). We look at how bringing a top-pair defenseman home from Tampa makes all the sense in the world. We break down his elite puck skills, his absolute rocket of a power-play shot, and why a max-term megadeal is a risk the Leafs had to take.

    Let's get into it.
