  • A Hero at the Gettysburg Peach Orchard: The Story of Anna Etheridge
    Apr 27 2026

Travel to Historic Locations with History or Drive.

The episode revisits July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard—one of the battle’s deadliest spots—and highlights Anna Etheridge (“Gentle Annie”), a rare woman on the front lines in skirts, armed with pistols, riding a horse with medical supplies, and tending the wounded under fire.

Scott and Jenn explain how Etheridge began serving with her husband in the 2nd Michigan as a laundress, shifted into nursing as combat intensified, and stayed with Michigan units even after her husband deserted, remaining with soldiers from early battles through Appomattox. They discuss testimony describing her as “cool and self-possessed,” her injury (shot in the hand) while continuing to aid others, and her recognition with the Kearny Cross (one of only two women to receive it).

The episode notes her later Congressional pension, work in Washington, DC, and burial with full military honors at Arlington, and suggests she deserves a Gettysburg monument.

  • Gettysburg 1863: A Civilian View of the Battle | Bo Brinkman & Samuel Roukin Interview
    Apr 20 2026

Travel to Historic Locations with History or Drive.

At the Gettysburg Film Festival, Scott and Jenn interview director Bo Brinkman (Gettysburg, 1993; upcoming Gettysburg 1863) and actor Samuel Roukin (Turn: Washington’s Spies) about portraying the Battle of Gettysburg through the experiences of civilians—especially women and children—rather than traditional battlefield spectacle.

Brinkman explains choosing a 9-year-old lead to heighten the emotional impact of war, slavery discussions, and a home invasion, and describes the film’s visual idea of the house as a “witness,” often framed through windows and the passage of time across all of 1863, including aftermath.

Roukin shares how visiting the cemetery and walking the vast battlefield deepened his sense of the human cost, echoed by accounts of visible blood evidence at local sites.

Travel to Historic Locations with History or Drive.

Scott and historian Jenn recap their Easter weekend 2026 trip to the Gettysburg Film Festival, describing Gettysburg’s high-energy atmosphere, panels, and meetups with the history community. They organized a Thursday-night gathering of 10–15 content creators at The Gettys Burger, then attended a “Turn” panel about Washington’s Culper Spy Ring with actors including Samuel Roukin (Captain Simcoe).

They covered a panel on the upcoming film “Gettysburg 1863,” directed by Bo Brinkman and starring Roukin, highlighting its town-centered perspective and production details, and recorded a small-group interview with the director and actor.

As media, they photographed major events including a George Washington panel with Ken Burns, Chris Jackson, and Rick Atkinson, and a sold-out Hamilton panel with Chris Jackson, Phillipa Soo, and Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan.
