  • 109: What Not to Say After Baby Loss - Lauren Hincks
    Apr 29 2026
When Lauren and her husband Jack lost their baby, Rupert, their world changed forever. In the days, weeks, and years that followed, they were met with an outpouring of support, but also well-meaning comments that often missed the mark.

In this episode of Still Parents, Lauren shares the story of Rupert, the reality of living with baby loss, and how unhelpful advice can compound grief. We explore what it means to navigate stillbirth and bereavement as a couple, how relationships are affected, and why there is no 'right' way to grieve.

This conversation is an honest look at grief after baby loss, and a gentle guide for anyone wanting to better support someone through it.

    In this episode:

    • The emotional reality of losing a baby
    • Grief after stillbirth and how it evolves over time
    • The impact of well-meaning but unhelpful comments
    • Navigating loss as a couple
    • What to say (and what not to say) to grieving parents

If you’ve experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss — or want to support someone who has, this episode offers insight, honesty, and compassion.

It is both surprising and humbling to discover that this podcast currently lacks any reviews here on audible, affording me the opportunity to be the first reviewer.

Regrettably, I stumbled upon this podcast following the loss of my son in October 2023 due to severe fetal growth restriction. I refer to this experience as a journey, one that has no definitive conclusion, as I will forever carry the absence of my first-born son within my family.
This journey can often feel isolating and filled with uncertainties.

However, listening to this podcast has illuminated my path, providing glimpses of light amidst the darkness. Hearing the stories of other bereaved parents navigate through their own trials has been a source of solace. The podcast has evoked a spectrum of emotions within me—laughter, hope, worry, sadness, and joy—all while delicately addressing such a heart-wrenching topic.

I deeply appreciate the candidness, authenticity, and vulnerability exhibited by everyone involved in the podcast. While listening to each individual's journey, I found myself naturally drawing comparisons to my own, yet simultaneously recognising the uniqueness of each person's experience. There is no room for comparison in such profound loss, and it pains me to acknowledge the multitude of individuals who have endured similar tragedies.

Thank you for providing a safe haven, raising awareness, and facilitating a platform for individuals to share their journey, thereby alleviating the sense of isolation that accompanies this journey
