The body on Federal Hill has no organs. No smell. No explanation.

Deacon finds the sheriff exactly where he was told to: at the bar, half a seven and seven in, eating catfish. Sheriff Mara Quinn is not what she appears. Neither is the town doctor. Neither is the body in the morgue with the chest cavity cleaned out, talon marks going in one direction, and a bite pattern that suggests something chomped through bone and pulled.

Deacon has fought devils. He knows what brimstone smells like. This is something else- rot, decay, and the unmistakable scent of desecration. Whatever took this hunter didn't kill him. It hollowed him out.

Federal Hill tomorrow. The college professor first thing in the morning. Something in those woods is feeding.
