IN THE BUILDING | Spurs vs. Timberwolves Game 1 POST-GAME REACTION | 2026 NBA Playoffs Western Conference Semifinals
Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay are back LIVE with your full post-game breakdown from Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The San Antonio Spurs are on to the second round for the first time since 2017, and tonight they opened up at home against a battle-tested Minnesota Timberwolves team at Frost Bank Center. We have got the full reaction, the biggest storylines, and everything you need to know heading into Game 1.
THE MATCHUP NOBODY SAW COMING
The ascendant San Antonio Spurs dispatched the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round, earning their first playoff series win since 2017. Now they face a battle-tested Timberwolves team that upset the third-seeded Denver Nuggets despite being ravaged by injuries. This is experience versus youth. Depth versus determination. And it is happening right here in San Antonio with home-court advantage on the Spurs' side.
Minnesota is seeking their third straight trip to the Western Conference Finals, going 49-33 in the regular season and proving once again they know how to compete when the stakes are highest. This is not a team that rolls over — the Wolves just knocked off the best offense in basketball.
THE INJURY CLOUD OVER MINNESOTA
Anthony Edwards' status is the most interesting storyline of this series. He has been cleared for on-court activity after suffering a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise against Denver and was listed as questionable for Game 1. Donte DiVincenzo will miss the entire series after tearing his Achilles in round one.
If Edwards and Dosunmu sit, the key question for Minnesota becomes where they get their offense from. Against Denver, it came from Jaden McDaniels, who is emerging as a genuine star in these playoffs, averaging 17.8 points per game on 49.4% shooting from the field in the postseason.
THE STORYLINE EVERYONE IS WATCHING — WEMBY VS. GOBERT
Rudy Gobert has been mentoring Victor Wembanyama since his prodigy was a high schooler. They now battle each other for a chance at a title. Two of the most dominant big men in the game, two former Defensive Players of the Year, and one of the most compelling individual matchups the Western Conference has to offer.
Minnesota head coach Chris Finch could elect to put Gobert on Castle to allow him to roam the paint as a rim protector, put Julius Randle on Wembanyama — a matchup that gave Wembanyama issues in the regular season — and assign McDaniels to De'Aaron Fox. Or he could just put Gobert directly on Wembanyama after his dominant performance on Nikola Jokic in round one. Either way, Wemby will have no easy nights in this series.
THE HISTORY BETWEEN THESE TWO FRANCHISES
The Spurs and Timberwolves have only met twice in the playoffs, both times in the first round — in 1999 and 2001. San Antonio won both series 3-1, with Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett as the stars on each side. This is a new era, a new generation, and a much bigger stage. The Western Conference Semifinals is uncharted territory for this Spurs core.
SUBSCRIBE AND HIT THE BELL — We are going LIVE after EVERY San Antonio Spurs playoff game this postseason. Don't miss a single take, breakdown, or debate. Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay will be here every step of the way on the road to a championship.
