In the summer of 2009, Luna took a maintenance shift at the Cold Spring Pump Station, a concrete building on a dead-end road outside of town. The slate door in the lower level wasn't on any blueprint, but every operator knew about it. When her supervisor gave her the key and told her to check the pressure gauge behind it, he didn't mention the sound or the smell or the fact that the gauge had been disconnected for years.
