In the final part of our three-part series on AI, we turn to a strange source: the enigmatic philosopher and social critic Paul Kingsnorth. Kingsnorth is a controversial figure, known as much for his critiques of capitalism as his hatred for leftist ideology. But he's also an important voice in a world increasingly spiralling down the drainpipe of "progress". In his latest book, he uses the idea of "the Machine" to paint a picture of the dark future we're falling headlong into. Unlike AI 2027, Kingsnorth's work is far more subjective and spiritual. Yet, in many ways, it speaks to the nascent fear we're all feeling, but often struggle to articulate.
