I listened to it in one go. Couldn't put it down. The gentle lilting accents of the narrator, the detailed description and observations of 19th century life in Virginia - for both slaves and white folks. It took me into a fascinating world that stayed with me long after the book was finished. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this book, recommend it to those who liked Twelve Years a Slave. Narration very good with lots of light and shade in reading.

Brilliant

This is not the genre of book I usually read but, having read the precis, I was intrigued and thought I'd give it a go. I was blown away by the story and characters and was both satisfied and sad when the book ended. This is a wonderful tale, told from the point of view of 2 characters, 'Lisbeth (the daughter of a tobacco plantation owner) and Mattie (a slave) who is forced to leave her young son with relatives so that she can act as Lisbeth's wet nurse and 'mammy'. The development of their relationship and the unfolding of their individual paths is beautifully told. I've continued to think about the characters long after I finished the book and have since discovered there is a sequel, The Mustard Seed, which will be my next listen. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
