About this listen

In the best-selling tradition of Smashed and The Glass Castle, this raw, eye-opening memoir tells the powerful story of Elizabeth Garrison's fractured childhood, descent into teenage drug addiction, and struggle to overcome nearly insurmountable odds.

Elizabeth invites the listener behind the closed doors of a picture-perfect Christian family to reveal a dark, hidden world of child abuse, domestic violence, and chilling family secrets all performed in the name of God under the tyrannical rule of her father.

Like countless teenage girls, Elizabeth turns to drugs and alcohol to escape. With smack-you-in-the-face honesty, Elizabeth chronicles the dark realities and real-life horrors of teenage drug abuse, living on the streets, foster homes, and treatment centers. She paints an unsparing portrait of scratching and clawing her way out of the grips of child abuse, addiction, and betrayal to find the strength within herself to save her own life.

Contains mature themes.

This was a book that was difficult to listen to. There is a large part of me that did not want to hear, yet felled compelled to honour the experiences of this brave woman, and those experiences of mine. There is gratitude that she had the courage to share her story. It allows others to believe that survival is possible, but so too is success.

Uncomfortable listening

Amazing story with the best of endings’ so glad she managed to sort herself out. We really don’t know how much of an effect trauma can have on our minds and bodies! & how some people really don’t care about your health! Go you Elizabeth!

Amazing

Very scattered story with no proper ending, no follow up on abuser or his punishment

Underwhelming, glad i didn’t have to buy it as extra..:

Quite recently, I have read a memoir of a woman who, during her childhood, was locked up in her body and not able to communicate with outside world. I found myself feeling disengaged whilst reading this book and felt disapointed that the author managed to make such an interesting topic so boring. So I really appreciated "Wounds of a father" for how involved I felt listening to it. It was hard to put the book down.

Very involving, great writting
