Summary

Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star - and he did it. Throughout Savage Garden's astonishing success - which included multiple Australian number 1s, cracking the US charts and selling more than 35 million albums worldwide - he kept telling us stories of love and longing, through his vulnerable, open song lyrics.

But the reality of his life was much more complicated than the constraints of a three-minute pop song.
In Unlovable, for the first time, Darren recounts the events and circumstances that shaped his unique life: from the childhood trauma of growing up with a violent, alcoholic father, his journey with depression, to the dizzying heights of worldwide fame in Savage Garden, and everything in between.

Told in his own lyrical words, Unlovable is a magical dark fairytale that reclaims the terrors and obstacles of his past to reveal the fabulous artist he has become.

a beautifully heartbreaking, but overwhelmingly truthful story of depression, anxiety, sexuality, but most of all learning to know worth and self respect!! I've followed Darren since 1997, had the pure joy or introducing my daughter to this amazing g human, we saw him last April on tour and she's hooked!!

A man pure of heart.

After being a fan of Darren’s since 1999 I thought I ‘knew’ everything but wow…it was a heart wrenching story and some of the parts made me gasp and feel sad he’s been treated so badly by people he thought he could trust. It lovely that it’s been spoken by Darren himself, will listen to this again

A beautifully told story

This was a fab account of the horrific childhood that this wonderful artist singer and songwriter ever endured which is unfortunately not as rare as we would like to think. He captures the way his dad made hi!m and his siblings feel really well, very relatable to anyone with a violent alcoholic father

Darren Hayes my favourite singer\ songwriter ever

I've loved Darren since his Savage Garden days, through his solo career and have seen him many times in concert. His lyrics always spoke to me on a level I didn't fully grasp as a child. As an adult processing my own trauma I understand why his lyrics spoke to me. What a beautifully written memoir, raw, emotional and a real glimpse into the human being behind the music. Thank you for sharing and 'staying'. His music has been a passenger in my life and helped me find solace in some of my darkest times. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for such a humble, insightful and remarkable human. Darren deserves every success and more.

Now it all makes sense!
