A fascinating listen. Some of Fintan's observation were purely prophetic and, now that Brexit is unfolding, can be seen to be so. One of my favourite audiobooks so far.

the quiet and clear presentation of a calamitous moment in UK history makes it all the more effective. no ranting. Just a simple exposition of the lies which encouraged the bigotry which brought about end of British influence while the grownups stood and watched in near silence. Masterful.

This series of articles and essays shows O’Tool the perceptive and orescientvwriter he is: I’d only ever heard him in radio and his turn of phrase and references to the Bard are simply delightful as well as totally illustrative if his arguments. People went overboard about party gate but as Peter Hennessy always maintained Boris Johnson did more damage to the nachinery of government than anything else; but it took O’Tool to point out that things only event that awry because we in England insist that we don’t need a written constitution which is all very well when thecworst leaders we elect are merely self-serving or dull! When we got Boris he was able to play it his uniquely deceitful and lazy way.

A superb diary of the absurd knots the 'English' government tied themselves in to solve an impossible puzzle set for themselves thanks to the promises of morality free chancers. It made me angry but it also made me chuckle (wryly). We still don't know how it will turn out at the time of writing this but it's been a hell of a downward spiral for us all.
