The Falco story is, as always, excellent. 'Nuff said. However, I find this narrator irritating. He voices Falco alright, but manages to make all of the other male characters, or most, like cretinous imbeciles, using a voice worthy of the best TV sterotypical low intelligence low class moron. I constantly expect each speech to start with derrrrrr .... Almost put me off the story to be honest, and i love the Falco novels.

Not so funny this time and you need a strong stomach or is that just me! Interesting detail about waterworks and how things worked then. OveralI, I prefer the more light -hearted Falco.

I've enjoyed these books in print and enjoyed listening to earlier stories. Unfortunately, the over-the-top comedy voices given to the side characters had me grinding my teeth. I won't be ordering another Lindsey Davis with this narrator.

Hot summer in Rome, a good mystery, and learn about Roman viaducts on the way.
Rodska is the best narrator, and he brings this novel to life. It is very straight forward and not as complcated as some of the other books in the series. Descriptions abound and it is an action driven novel that keeps you right up there with Falco.
Helena and her brothers are there, but more as supporting characters, leaving Marcus and Petro to lead the way.

This is my ninth in-order listen/read to the Falco novels. They are so well crafted and easy both to listen to and to read; so much so that they lure you into going straight into the next novel in the series. (I am already nearing the end of the tenth adventure.) This particular listen/read was engrossing despite the thoroughly unpleasant crimes at the heart of this adventure. That said Davis does vary the atmosphere and characters’ humour, banter cynicism provide relief. As usual the depiction of developing relationships between characters are key to the attraction in these novels. The depiction of life in the raw in the Aventine area of Rome remains a draw. I liked the way the author sets us listeners up to expect one thing, then to pull the rug from under our feet. I also like the way the author is able to link, neatly, to previous novels, not that this works against listening/reading them in isolation. The character of Helena vies for the largest share of the applause - perhaps because of her complexity. Christian Rodska is back behind the microphone to perform the book which will be welcomed by many. For me, the novels can accommodate most any performer, and I am now relaxing into this.
