About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader team up against a threat to the Empire in this thrilling novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.

“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.”

Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edge of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root—its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the Emperor’s favor and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs—including the Death Star project—the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission. But the Emperor knows it’s not the first time Vader and Thrawn have joined forces. And there’s more behind his royal command than either man suspects.

In what seems like a lifetime ago, General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic and Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo, officer of the Chiss Ascendancy, crossed paths for the first time. One on a desperate personal quest, the other with motives unknown . . . and undisclosed. But facing a gauntlet of dangers on a far-flung world, they forged an uneasy alliance—neither remotely aware of what his future held in store.

Now, thrust together once more, they find themselves bound again for the planet where they once fought side by side. There they will be doubly challenged—by a test of their allegiance to the Empire . . . and by an enemy that threatens even their combined might.

I know it's not the most recent release but Thrawn: Alliances was great. A mystery that for a more observant reader than myself would be enjoyable to work out ones self but equally enjoyable to have unveiled at the end. A good balence of reworking aspects of legends material and building up on them in a more nuanced and consistent way while incorporating truely new concepts left unexplored in the 40 year history of the legends continuity. A consolidation of the character of Thrawn himself and an interesting insight into Vader which hasn't really been seen since the first wave of canon books or the Vader comics. And a general increasing of the complexity of the galactic political climate in a far more astute way than the movies could ever hope to achieve. It was the first book in a while that really felt like it was building up to something big and basically restored much of my lost faith in the series after the upset that was episode 8, with the help of solo and the announcement of the clone wars finally getting continued that is. While I with hold my optimism for the films I can rest assured that as long as great authors like Timothy Zahn stick around the future of the star wars books is bright. Now, if only James Luceno could get a new one out, or Claudia Grey. I feel at some point a review of a star wars book will not require comparison to legends and to be honest this one didn't need It, but, there were just a few things from legends in there that basically acted as salt and pepper on the satisfying meal that was the books plot itself. Things that wouldn't distract from it if reading from a fresh reader's point of view, but, from one familiar with or a veteran of the old continuity it just adds to it.

An enjoyable and intriguing read.

Thrawn: Alliances is an excellent continuation of Grand Admiral Thrawn’s story, who continues to impress with his cunning tactical mind, brought vividly to life by Marc Thompson’s fantastic performances. His voice for Darth Vader may not match James Earl Jones’ iconic tones, but Thompson aptly and impressively conveys his menace. Thrawn remains perfectly acted, conveying the controlled and subtle manner of his speaking. The other characters are voiced to a similar quality.

Timothy Zahn’s writing is excellent, providing a tale which mounts in tension the longer it goes on. While it doesn’t start out as boldly and exciting out as the prior Thrawn novel, it builds up incredibly.

An excellent continuation to the best Star Wars story in the new canon.

Story dragged at points but wrapped up nicely. 4 story lines, thrawn and vader, thrawn and anakin, padme and the locals and captain faro with the stormtrooper squadron was allot to keep track of.

Won’t go into spoilers but the story is ok, not as engaging as the last Thrawn book. Narration is very good. Marc Thompson’s Thrawn is excellent as is his other male voices. However his female voices, especially Padme is far to child like and ‘girly’, I remember Padme being tougher and more in charge. A great book for Star Wars completists but not exactly a necessary one.

So so story. Almost excellent narration.
