About this listen

The first book in the No. 1 global bestselling They Both Die at the End series. What if you could find out your death date from a single phone call? Death-Cast is calling . . . will you answer?

‘If They Both Die at the End broke your heart and put it back together again, be prepared for this novel to do the same. A tender, sad, hopeful and youthful story that deserves as much love as its predecessor.’ Culturefly
'[A] heart-pounding story [full] of emotion and suspense.' Kirkus
'An extraordinary book with a riveting plot.' Booklist

A love story with a difference - an unforgettable tale of life, loss and making each day count.

On September 5th, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: they're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: there's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure - to live a lifetime in a single day.

Another beautiful, heartbreaking and life-affirming book from the brilliant Adam Silvera, author of More Happy Than Not, History Is All You Left Me, What If It's Us, Here's To Us and the Infinity Cycle series.

t's an intriguing exploration of how society would turn death into a commodity/experience if it was trendy rather than a taboo. I loved the way all the characters were interwoven throughout the story. It's heavy at times, since our characters are constantly grappling with their inevitable end, but within that there's a lot of sweetness. Massive shout out to Mateo's reader, his interpretation of female characters was the best I've ever heard in an audiobook read by a man.

Heart: warming and breaking

After seeing some of the negative reviews I was sceptical but after the fittest few minutes I was hooked and couldn’t stop. I felt like I was on the emotional rollercoaster with the character and yes I sobbed. Although it’s one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve read the beauty in the storytelling makes it all worth while. A must listen/read.

This book was a rollercoaster from start to finish, full of twists and turns I did not see coming that both struck fear into my heart and dazzling relief, and beautifully written. It was really insightful and inspiring to see how many lives were intertwined and how impactful Matteo and Rufus were on strangers they'd never encounter on their last day, and it really put life into perspective for me, to think about how I am perceived and how I can learn to accept and understand death. Full of moments that made me laugh endlessly and moments that made me smile sadly, want to cry, and angry about how unfair the fate of these two boys are. Adam Silvera did a brilliant job creating such a gripping story with characters who are charming and easy to become attached to, which made it all the more devastating in the end, which may I just say, I am absolutely heartbroken over. The perfect amount of raw emotion and brutality that felt like being kicked while you're down, without being too much or too heavy. The voice acting is amazing too, the emotion and storytelling did a wonderful job of painting the scene and helping me to feel the character's pain in a way I might not have if I had read the book solely on paper. Matteo and Rufus will always be in my heart, and thank you to Adam Silvera for writing such an incredible book.
