this is one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. I was weeping with emotion several times during the book... suitable from aged 9 up I would say

amazing

Unabridged and read by someone with a good voice is always better. The tape version read by Author was not nice, quite boring, considering he can write such great books.

Great book

Just as good as I remember with great delivery. not a good story for younger listeners.

Good

There are important overtones in this story: children versus the might of a philistine State; a family who put Humanity first; Art and Creative Minds as the keepers of humane values; the aggression and cruelty of Peoples which can be overcome by gentleness...and magic... .
The story is given its nicely rounded unity by the symbol of the mysterious Tower which dominates the circumscribed city of Amaranth. Many of the other details are generic Fantasy stock-in-trade, and non-the- worse for that: the kindly mud-dwellers; the animals who rally to the ultimate cause of Good, against militaristic Evil; the strange mansion in the mountains guarded by cold fires... . And - a striking Inclusion - the twins are accompanied by their Special, much spurned, classmate who teaches them many lessons... . His Being is very keenly and lovingly observed by William Nicholson.
There is much of the Folktale in this novel, which also shows amply that Fantasy never tires (we never tire...). Good reading.
